Posted by on Aug 13, 2014 in Press Releases | Comments Off on Political Responses to the Killing of Mario Deanne at Montego Bay Police Station

NDM President Peter Townsend has condemned the killing of Mr. Mario Deane a Jamaican citizen of St. James at a Montego Bay Police Station after being arrested over an allegation regarding a ‘ganja spliff’. The NDM President has expressed shock and outrage at the killing of yet another Jamaican in the care of (agents of the) state and begs to differ with Justice Minister Mark Golding’s view that the main issue in this latest dastardly and draconian act of the police is about the need for ganja law reforms but is rather of the view that the issue goes beyond a ‘ganja’ spliff and speaks more of continued police excesses and an abusive, uncaring culture practised by successive governments. The NDM condemns the both the Government and the Opposition for the hypocritical, self-serving photo opportunity statements in their effort...

Jamaica’s Slippage in the Human Development Index

Posted by on Aug 1, 2014 in Press Releases | Comments Off on Jamaica’s Slippage in the Human Development Index

We have taken note of Jamaica’s recent slippage on the UNDP’s Human Development Report. Successive administrations have refused to engage in complete reform of entitlement and labour market systems, the economy and most important education especially at the early childhood and tertiary levels and available health services. It should be the intention of any responsible administration to create educated citizens who are able to participate in the economy, thus allowing them to benefit from the fruits of growth. In order to improve on the Human Development Report, Jamaica needs an efficient state, more accountability, much less corruption and more Public-Private Partnerships. These partnerships would reduce the public sector cost of delivering these critical services to the public. If we continue to practice the corrosive political culture, wrong socio-economic policies and poor governance in Jamaica we can expect to continue...

Press Release on Tax Increases

Posted by on May 6, 2014 in Press Releases | Comments Off on Press Release on Tax Increases

The National Democratic Movement (NDM) is shocked and dismayed that the PNP administration has again increased taxes on the poor, suffering, disenfranchised and barely surviving public. The NDM wants to know when will this ‘gluttonous’ “fat-cats” government’ understand that the Jamaican people can hardly survive and that many are going to bed hungry nightly, with some on the verge of starvation. The NDM is of the view that the tax increases imposed by successive governments over many years have not met the targeted projections of additional taxes, yet administration after administration continue to increase taxes. “This heartless PNP government seem never to learn, doing the same thing year after year and always expecting different results”, said the NDM. The Movement states that, “The new tax imposed on ATM and Internet transactions have now gone where no previous Administration has...

Minister Hanna’s Reasons for Amending Abortion Legislation Dangerous

Posted by on Jun 2, 2013 in Press Releases | Comments Off on Minister Hanna’s Reasons for Amending Abortion Legislation Dangerous

The Vice President of the National Democratic Movement (NDM), Dr. Apollone Reid, is cautioning Minister Hanna and the PNP-controlled Parliament against changing Jamaica’s abortion laws based on U.S. studies that cannot be generalized, but show mere correlation to reduction in crime and not true association with the real nature of the nation’s criminal problem. Dr. Reid emphasized that the fact that laws are old do not necessarily imply that they are ineffective in safeguarding against the repercussions that could emerge among providers as well as recipients of abortions if inappropriately changed. “We need not catch a cold every time America sneezes,” Dr. Reid stated.   The NDM Vice President asserted that this particular proposed legalization of abortion is an ill-perceived shortcut to repeated governments’ neglect of the “young, poor, unemployed who live in economically and socially deprived communities.” We...
